The Lucumo is a rough tree with thick green leaves. This attractive tree ranges from 25 to 50 ft (8-15 m) in height, has a dense, rounded crown, velvety hairs on its young branchlets, and copious milky latex. It’s fruit the Lucuma (Lúcuma obovata H.B.K) forms part of the Sapotaceae family, its main habitat occurring in the Andean valleys of Peru.

However, it has adapted very well to Peruvian coastal conditions. It has a unique and most agreeable flavour, with an intensely yellow-orange colour and a unique pleasant aroma.
Lucuma is recognized as being a most nutritious fruit with a high content of fibre, carotene, niacin and iron. It is considered to be a native Peruvian fruit which has been a basic foodstuff since time immemorial.It has been designed on pottery and textiles, demonstrating its importance in the pre-Inca diet.
It is processed like flour (lucuma flour) in order to satisfy the markets during the seasons when it is not available as fresh fruit.

In Peru, there is even a higher demand for Lucuma ice cream than for the commonly consumed strawberry, chocolate and vanilla flavors.
